The most basic goal of the class is to provide students with sufficient understanding of the basic elements of research design to be critical readers of research publications in the social sciences. In particular, they should be able to understand how the researchers arrived at their conclusions, assess whether the design of the study is adequate to support them, and possibly identify shortcomings in the design that would affect the conclusions.
