The goal of the course is to provide students with the critical understanding of what social research is and how it is conducted. Apart from the awareness of the complex theoretical issues of epistemology and ontology, the course also aims at developing the practical skills of the students in applying specific data-collection methods through conducting a research project throughout the semester. This is why the course is divided into two parts. The first part enhances the students’ knowledge of the issues and concepts such as basic principles of qualitative and quantitative research and their differences, ethics in social research, hypothesis, variables, conceptualization, and operationalization, etc. The second part focuses on specific techniques of data collection and analysis such as interviewing, focus groups, content and discourse analysis, etc. Finally, the purpose of the course is to train social researchers who have a clear understanding of ethical research and academic honesty and are able to follow the moral principles while conducting social research.
